What to know about window sizes

Some homes have standard window sizes, but not all do. At Infinity by Marvin, standard window sizes are not a requirement. We custom size and manufacture all our windows to fit your home. Let’s review frequently seen window sizes so you can be prepared for your replacement project.

What are standard window sizes?

Standard window sizes are common window dimensions used for different types of windows. There is no official standard window size. Instead, there are common ranges of window sizes found in homes. For instance, a double hung window typically ranges in size from 24 to 48 inches wide and 36 to 72 inches high. Though some companies might keep windows in standard sizes in stock, they might not them in stock all the time. Infinity by Marvin custom builds all windows for your home.

Understanding window sizes and standard sizes

Measuring for replacement windows takes three steps. Measure the width, height, and depth. Record the measurement in total inches, with width first followed by height and depth. Several measurements from different spots on the window can produce more accurate dimensions.

Sometimes windows get measured with feet and inches indicated to identify the window. Some manufacturers include the dimensions to identify the window size by four digits. For instance, a window that is 2 feet, 0 inches wide by 3 feet, 0 inches high becomes 2030. Other window manufacturers might use total inches to identify the window. In the previous example, the window becomes 2436. It’s important to note whether the window size measurement refers to the rough opening for the window or the size of the window.

Standard sizes by window type

Windows come in several styles and orientations. You might think there are just a few standard window sizes to choose from for your windows, but you can custom size Infinity by Marvin windows down to 1/64th-inch increments.

Double Hung Window Standard Sizes

Infinity Double Hung Windows can range in size from 18-inches wide by 23-inches high to 48-inches wide by 96-inches high. Frequently seen double hung sizes include:

  • 2 feet wide by 3 feet high

  • 2 feet wide by 4 feet high

  • 2 feet wide by 4 feet, 6 inches high

  • 2 feet, 8 inches wide by 5 feet high

  • 4 feet wide by 6 feet high

Casement window standard sizes

Infinity Casement Windows range in size from 18-inches wide by 23 ¾-inches high to 36-inches wide by 86-inches high with our Easy Wash® hinge. Sizes with our Clear View® hinge range from 18-inches wide by 23 ¾-inches high to 30 23/64-inches wide by 72-inches high. You can also custom size Infinity Casement Windows. Common casement window sizes include:

  • 1 foot, 6 inches wide by 2 feet high

  • 1 foot, 6 inches wide by 2 feet, 6 inches high

  • 2 feet wide by 3 feet, 6 inches high

  • 2 feet, 6 inches wide by 4 feet high

Sliding window standard sizes

Infinity by Marvin Slider Windows can come as small as 30-inches wide by 18-inches high to as large as 72-inches wide by 60-inches high. Each Infinity Slider Window is custom built to the specific dimensions needed for your home. Common slider window sizes include:

  • 3 feet wide by 2 feet high

  • 3 feet wide by 3 feet high

  • 5 feet wide by 3 feet high

  • 6 feet wide by 4 feet high

Window sizes by room

Window sizes can vary depending on the room they’re in. Larger windows tend to appear in living rooms and bathroom windows can come smaller. In some parts of the home, windows need to have a certain size and/or glass type to meet building code. A basement requires at least one egress window in each bedroom. Bedrooms in other parts of the home must have one window meet egress requirements.

Are there benefits to using a standard vs. custom window size?

Standard window sizes often get used in new home construction. Replacing them can require custom-sized windows because homes settle. As a home settles, window opening dimensions can change slightly. Custom-built windows get designed to fit the specific rough opening for your home. They can fit your home better than standard-sized windows and need less installation work. Custom-sized replacement windows can get installed by keeping the existing window frame, which saves time versus a full-frame replacement. At Infinity, every window is built to order.

Frequently asked questions

Window sizes do include the frame. They do not include window trim.

New construction windows can have bigger sizes than replacement windows because they have more parts than a replacement window. New construction windows include a full window frame and nail fins. Replacement windows do not have nail fins unless it’s a full-frame replacement project. Insert replacement uses the existing frame.
