Window Repair vs. Replacement: Which is Right for You?

Replacing windows is an investment in your home, and an important one. After all, windows keep the elements out, help control your energy costs, and contribute to the beauty of your home. When they don’t work or look like they should, you know you need to do something.

But what? Today we’ll talk about the pros and cons of window replacement vs. window repair.

Window Repair:

Do you really need to replace those ailing windows or are they worth trying to fix? Determining your best way forward can be challenging, and we recommend consulting a window expert before you invest the time and money. Some benefits of repair are:

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Window repair can sometimes cost less than replacement, especially when the damage is minor (such as repairs to broken seals or replacing hardware, damaged frames, and sashes). Again, this is something you’ll want an expert to help you determine.
  • Preservation of Character: Older homes often feature historic architectural details and original windows can be part of that classic look. Repairing those historically accurate windows can sometimes be more cost-effective than replacing them. But if they’re not repairable, you can replace them with new windows that have a classic look. More on that in a minute.
  • Sustainability: A potential environmental consideration of repair vs. replacement is that repair can conserve raw materials by extending the life of existing windows.

All great reasons to repair your broken windows. But what if your windows are too costly to repair or aren’t repairable at all?

Window Replacement:

Replacing your windows can be more of an investment, but the benefits are many. Some factors to consider as you research your options are:

  • Upfront Cost: Replacing your windows with new ones can have higher upfront costs. New windows are definitely an investment in your home. However, those old windows will need to be replaced at some point. And there are many benefits — long- and short-term — to replacement.
  • Energy Efficiency: The difference in energy efficiency of older and new windows can be significant. Old windows are probably not keeping your house well-insulated, causing drafts and increasing your energy bills. Choosing to replace your old windows with energy-efficient windows helps control your home's energy bill and improve its insulation.
  • Beauty and Style: Size, shape, color, hardware — there are so many ways to change and improve the style of your home with new windows. Before you make any decisions, it’s best to consult an expert to ensure your new windows achieve the style you’re shooting for.
  • Increased Property Value: Getting new windows improves your home's curb appeal and can increase the value, sometimes by a lot. Choosing the right window material and style makes all the difference.

So, what’s best for you? If your windows are repairable, fixing them often comes with less upfront costs. If your windows aren’t able to be repaired or you’re thinking more long-term (or you’re just looking to update your home’s style), replacing your windows is a strong option.
